Writing Tutorial: A List Of Words To Use In A Text Response Essay

If this is the first time when you write a text response essay, you might not fully understand what you have to do. However, this is one of the easiest kinds of compositions; basically you have to follow the instruction that your professor gives you. He will ask you to write or analyze a part of a text, and you have to do so. These are some of the expressions that you will have to use:

  • “My interpretation of this is...” Sometimes you will be required to write exactly what you understand from a certain paragraph, to discuss about your own interpretation. In this case it’s better to be completely honest and to write exactly what you understand. Don’t try to approach the subject from a different perspective, because your professor will notice this easily.
  • “I do not agree/ I agree with this because...” Very often you will be asked to write if you agree or not with an idea or paragraph from the text. Well, this is the perfect opportunity to express your personal opinion. You can say anything you want as long as it is related to the subject; you can’t go wrong if you are honest.
  • “The author’s purpose was...” There are texts where you have to guess what was the author’s purpose. This can be exciting for you if you like puzzles, and it will be entertaining for your teacher to read what you write. Don’t be afraid to use your imagination; again, this is only a matter of what you understand and no one can object against this.
  • “This paragraph is significant because”. In many texts there are paragraphs that change the entire situation. The paragraph does not have to be long, but it needs to be meaningful or to bring new evidence in the discussion. In this case you will have to bring quotes from the paragraph to prove your point.
  • “This is the central figure of the story” If you are required to identify the central figure of the story, you can consider yourself lucky. This is the easiest task that you can get and all you have to do is follow the evidence that is presented in the main text. If you are not sure that you made your point only with writing, you can also use some quotations.
